Just-Mathematics: Empowering the Next Generation Through Numbers

Mathematics is the backbone of science, technology, and innovation, yet it remains one of the most challenging subjects for students across Nigeria. For many young people, failure in mathematics has become a stumbling block to pursuing higher education and fulfilling their dreams. Determined to change this narrative, Engr. (Mrs) Araba Clara Tounse, a seasoned engineer with an outstanding career in civil engineering, founded Just-Mathematics, a non-governmental organization dedicated to reshaping the future of Nigerian youths through mathematics.

The Founder: Engr. (Mrs) Araba Clara Tounse

Engr. Clara Tounse is not just an engineer by profession but a leader who has left remarkable footprints in the engineering sector. She has successfully executed numerous award-winning construction and civil engineering projects for private institutions, public establishments, and government bodies.

However, her love for children and education drew her into another mission—empowering the younger generation through mathematics. After years of observing the alarming trend in secondary school education, she identified a disturbing reality:

  • Nearly 80% of secondary school leavers are unable to gain admission into tertiary institutions because they consistently fail mathematics in critical examinations such as WAEC, NECO, GCE, and JAMB.

This educational gap often pushes many young people into destructive paths such as fraud, drug abuse, and other social vices.

To address this challenge, she established Just-Mathematics.

The Birth of Just-Mathematics

Engr. Clara believes that attention to mathematics by school owners, teachers, and even government institutions has dwindled compared to the past. This realization gave birth to Just-Mathematics, an NGO committed to reviving the culture of excellence in mathematics.

The organization focuses on:

  • Organizing tutorials and intensive training programs for pupils and students.

  • Conducting competitive examinations among trained students.

  • Awarding the best three performers, thereby encouraging healthy competition and motivation.

Impact So Far

Over the past 10 years, Just-Mathematics has:

  • Trained more than 25,000 pupils across Nigeria.

  • Produced tangible testimonies from students who have not only overcome their fear of mathematics but also excelled academically.

  • Restored hope to families by empowering children with skills necessary for higher education and future careers.
